Walk into any mid-market manufacturing operation, logistics provider, or professional services firm. Ask to see their systems architecture documentation. In most cases, there is none. What exists instead is a collection of vendor invoices, a few passwords in a shared spreadsheet, and the institutional knowledge of one or two people who have been there long enough to know which server does what. What Engineering Discipline Looks Like in Practice
When we begin an engagement, we do not start with a vendor list or a product recommendation. We start with requirements: what must the system do, under what constraints, with what consequences of failure? These requirements are documented, reviewed with stakeholders, and signed off before any design work begins.
From requirements, we produce architecture: logical and physical topology diagrams, hardware specifications with documented rationale for every component choice, network segmentation models with security boundaries, storage subsystem designs with capacity projections, and failure mode analyses that identify every single point of failure before it has a chance to cause an outage.
This architecture is captured in a formal System Design Document — the single authoritative reference that governs procurement, implementation, and ongoing operations. No tribal knowledge. No guesswork. No vendor lock-in. Any competent engineer can pick up the SDD and understand exactly how the system is designed and why every decision was made.
